Chapter Ten

He’d been unemployed for exactly thirty-two days—he looked at his watch as he pulled into the driveway of Micah’s condo—twelve hours, and thirty-four minutes. Not that he was counting. Truthfully, he wasn’t really unemployed, just no longer working for the advertising agency Trio Detroit. Since making the decision to pursue growing SomaSyc and finding the best—most responsible—way to monetize Yudo, Christian and Alex had both decided to quit their full-time jobs and invest all their time in getting their company off the ground. Self-employed, Alex kept trying to get him to say. But the lack of a retirement plan was unnerving, as was the first massive check he’d made out to COBRA to ensure he kept his insurance until SomaSyc could make enough money to provide the founders with benefits, if not a salary.

It could be months before they cleared a real profit, which was how Christian found himself living with the Maddox twins. Until the company started to operate in the black and to keep from draining his own savings, Christian had given up his month-to-month rental in Dearborn and moved in with Alex and Micah. He was technically “renting” Micah’s third bedroom, but he had yet to pay Alex’s twin any money, let alone spend one night in the third bedroom.

He and Alex had done the official boyfriend/boyfriend talk in August—solidifying then what they’d both known for months was more than a fling—the day Alex called John Stratton of the Ford Motor Company and turned down the offer of a job and to buy the rights to Alex’s inventions. Christian had put his two-week notice in at Trio Detroit the next day and moved in with Alex that weekend.

It had all happened so fast that some days Christian still couldn’t believe that his existence was real.

The last two months had gone by in a whirlwind of investor meetings, legal paperwork, marketing plans, and Alex.

Alex.

Christian smiled.

Alex Maddox had turned out to be more than he had hoped the inventor would be—genius-level intelligent, kind, thoughtful, forgetful, and so innocent that Christian had an overwhelming drive to protect the maker jock from the cruelties of the business world. But it was unavoidable.

Finding the perfect investor for SomaSyc was becoming challenging, and the stress of the months-long search was wearing on all of them.

And now there was the certainty of another surgery hanging over his head.

More than the thought of another procedure, it was the extended recovery time and stepped-up physical therapy that annoyed Christian more than anything else. He wasn’t worried about the arthroscopy, it was a surgery he’d gone through a couple of times now and would most likely have to repeat in the future.

He had a great surgeon in Michael, even if the man was tied to Christian’s ex. And luckily, he still had his insurance through Trio Detroit to cover most of the cost. But the downtime was going to put extra strain on Alex just when Micah was heading out of town for four months.

Christian couldn’t put off the procedure, though.
